Building a Village: How Two Local Moms Are Creating Community, One Collaboration at a Time

In the heart of Bloomington-Normal, two women are redefining what it means to support moms — not just as parents, but as entrepreneurs, collaborators, and community-builders. Kiyana Myron, owner of PlaySynthesis, and Aelsa, founder of The Village Collective, are the dynamic duo behind a growing movement that empowers women, nurtures families, and fosters authentic connections.

From a Play Space to a Safe Space

Kiyana opened PlaySynthesis with one goal in mind: to create a safe, welcoming environment where parents can take a breath while their children play freely. Six months into her business, she's already seeing the impact.

“I wanted to build a haven where parents could come in, sit on the couch, relax, and feel seen,” Kiyana shared. And that’s exactly what’s happening — from regular playdates to partnerships with organizations like OSF’s Moms of Beautiful Babies group, PlaySynthesis is steadily growing into more than just a play space. It’s a village.

Marketing That Makes Friends

Meanwhile, Aelsa was facing a challenge. Her original idea — a co-op for moms — wasn’t gaining traction. But instead of giving up, she pivoted. The Village Collective was born out of real conversations and a desire to foster connections in new ways.

“What if we had a free marketing network for mom-owned businesses? What if we hosted playdate-style networking events?” Aelsa recalled brainstorming with Kiyana. That evolution has grown into a thriving directory of mom-owned businesses, anchored by in-person relationships and powered by collaboration.

Mother’s Market: A Day of Celebration and Support

One of their latest joint ventures is the Mother’s Market, a pop-up shopping event hosted at PlaySynthesis on May 3rd from 9 a.m. to noon. It’s designed to spotlight mom-owned businesses while giving families a chance to shop, socialize, and celebrate Mother’s Day — all in one place.

Think curated gift baskets, handmade crafts, wellness products, and more — all created by local moms. And while parents shop, kids can enjoy the play space.

“This is about supporting moms in every way — the moms who own businesses, the moms who need a break, the moms who just want to connect,” said Aelsa.

Confirmed vendors include:

  • Mackenzie Beer – Local doula offering postpartum care baskets

  • Lexi Atkinson Hair – Family-friendly salon owner creating self-care kits

  • Vanilla Flowers – Maker of long-lasting floral arrangements

  • Permanent jewelry artisans, handcrafted gifts, and more

And yes — dads are welcome too. “Tell your wife to sleep in and bring the kids,” Aelsa joked. “Let them play while you shop for her.”

The Power of Collaboration

Both women agree: the most rewarding part of their journey has been the connections. Whether it’s through word-of-mouth marketing or partnering with other local organizations, they’ve found strength in collaboration.

“It’s not just about veteran businesses — we’re also supporting people who are just starting,” said Kiyana. “We’re helping each other grow.”

Why They Love Bloomington-Normal

It’s no surprise that a shared love for this tight-knit, supportive community fuels their drive. Whether it’s the local Facebook groups, parent networks, or entrepreneurial spirit, both women feel lucky to be building their vision here.

“There’s just so much generosity,” said Kiyana. “Everyone is willing to help each other.”
